Increasing affordability of assistive devices for PWDs

The Kenya Kwanza government promised to exempt all assistive devices from import duty and explore possibilities of partnership with domestic manufacturers to produce affordable devices.

  •  The Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025, enacted in May 2025, provides for exemption from import duty and VAT for health materials or equipment related to PWDs.
  • There has been progress with regard to partnerships with local manufacturers in the production of assistive devices, as a factory is being built at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) for the production of the assistive devices.
