Give developers incentives to build more affordable housing
The government promised to develop at least 200,000 homes annually in its quest to address the housing shortage in the country, where nearly 61 per cent of urban households live in slums. This is under the Affordable Housing Programme, one of the priority areas (Priority no. 3 – Housing and Settlements) in the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto.
The target of 200,000 homes annually is far from being met with. By early 2025 production was less than 50,000 units annually.
While the government has highlighted ongoing project delivery and the completion of some housing units, such as 1,080 units in Mukuru Kwa Reuben by early 2025, there are reports of decreased construction, with government-built affordable houses falling by half in 2024
