The Government intends to increase internet broadband connectivity across the country through the construction of 100,000 kilometers of national fiber optic connectivity network.
a) 9th November 2022: “…We have build over 9,000km of fiber optic cable. We have connected over 1,600 government institutions over the country,” ICT CS Eliud Owalo said during the roll-out of 25,000 free wi-fi hotspots in markets.
b) 28th September 2023: Notice of a motion was given on the development of measures to mitigate digital exclusion (the motion lapsed with the National Assembly business of the calendar year 2024)
c) 8th March 2024: “…We have laid a total of 13,712 kilometers of fiber cable and increased the number of Public-Wi-Fi hot spots from 40 in 2022 to 1,222 in 2023. Cumulatively we have established a total of 1,262 Wi-Fi spots,” Government Spokesperson, Dr Isaac Mwaura stated during a media briefing at the Konza Technocity.
d) 9th June 2024: The government is set to save Ksh 170 billion through a deal between the Kenya Power Company and the Ministry of ICT, utilizing Kenya Power’s transmission lines to roll out 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable across the country.
