Transforming Turkana infrastructure with Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar Road

On 30 August 2025, President William Ruto announced that his government is transforming Turkana County’s infrastructure, starting with the overhaul of the Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar Road. The President acknowledged that Turkana has been left behind other regions for too long and positioned this road as a lifeline to connect the county.

  • The Maili Tisa–Kitale–Kainuk–Lokichar road project is a phased infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving the transport corridor linking western Kenya to Turkana and South Sudan, implemented under government and African Development Bank (AfDB) funding arrangements.
  • The project has been divided into several construction lots, including Morpus–Kainuk and Kainuk–Lokichar, which are being handled separately under the overall corridor development plan.
  • It has progressed into procurement and implementation stages, with donor-backed documentation and project frameworks confirming structured rollout across the different sections.
