Launch construction of Thika to Museum Hill Expressway by September 2026

On 22 February 2026, President William Ruto announced during a church service at Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) in Ruiru that the government will begin construction of a new 60-kilometre expressway from Thika town to Museum Hill in Nairobi in September 2026.

  • President Ruto said the project, modelled on the existing JKIA-Westlands Expressway, will provide a lasting solution to chronic traffic congestion along Thika Road, particularly the stretch after Githurai through to Museum Hill. He indicated that construction will commence once the ongoing JKIA-Westlands road expansion is completed. KeNHA has already issued notices for roadside traders along Thika Superhighway to vacate within seven days to facilitate upcoming highway upgrades.
