Hiring 20,000 intern teachers on Permanent & Pensionable terms

In June 2026, the President of Kenya pledged that 20,000 intern teachers would transition to permanent and pensionable terms and that a further 24,000 teachers would be recruited, bringing the total number of teachers hired under his administration to 124,000.

In August 2026, the President announced that the government would recruit 20,000 additional teachers before the end of the year, to ensure that every child has access to education. The budget for this recruitment drive was factored into the July budget for the 2026/2027 Financial Year.
