Government to settle Ksh2 Billion Methodist University debt
On 21 February 2026, President William Ruto pledged to allocate Ksh2 billion to partially settle the government’s debt to Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) in the 2026/27 financial year.
The total debt owed to KeMU exceeds Ksh5 billion, accumulated under a discontinued student sponsorship scheme. The debt is part of a broader Ksh60 billion owed by the government to 32 private universities.
KeMU has been facing financial strain for years due to delayed government funding and declining student revenue, something the university itself acknowledged in its strategic plan.
As of May 2026, there is no public record of the government offsetting their debt to KeMU.
