Export Cash Crops

The Kenya Kwanza Government promised that it would revamp underperforming and collapsed export crops while expanding emerging ones (coffee, cashew nuts, pyrethrum, avocado, macadamia nuts).

  • In 2025, coffee export earnings increased with expanded direct sales to diverse markets and high international prices, though auction volume fell.
  • Regulations under the Crops Act 2013 mandate registration and licensing for dealers and processors of cashew nuts to ensure quality and prevention of illegal activities.
  •  The government aims to revive the pyrethrum industry through key environmental and policy shifts. The implemented policy changes an actions include; a ban on harzadous pesticide products which reduces the competition for natural pyrethrum and legal reforms such as the Business Laws (Ammendment) Act 2024, which empowers regulators to ban the importation of chemicals that are prohibited in their countries of origin.
  • As of 2025, Kenya’s Agricultural and Food Authority has lifted the suspension on Fuerte and Pinkerton avocado harvesting and export.
  • The Macadamia sector saw a major policy reversal. In late 2024 and throughout 2025, the government temporarily lifted the ban on exporting raw macadamia nuts for one year.
