The Kenya Kwanza government promised to leverage public procurement to build leather industry clusters (Athi River, Narok, Isiolo, Wajir) and secure linkages with technical support from overseas markets (Italy).
The Ewaso Ng’iro Tannery and Leather Factory in Narok was commissioned in May 2025. It processes hides and skins locally, is equipped with infrastructure including an effluent treatment plant, staff, and machines, and produces finished leather.
The Kenanie Leather Industrial Park (in Machakos County/Athi River region) is nearing operationalization, with infrastructure largely in place (roads, utilities, effluent treatment, ready warehouses, etc.). The Park was set to be fully operational as of 31st December 2025 but so far there is currently no supporting evidence of its launch.
There has also been progress in securing technical support from overseas markets, in particular, through the Kenya-Italy Action Plan for the years 2026-2029.
