Setting up leather industry clusters

• The Kenya Kwanza government promised to leverage public procurement to build capability (uniformed services, school shoes). Build leather industry clusters (Athi River, Narok, Isiolo, Wajir) and secure linkages with technical support from overseas markets (Italy).

July 9th, 2024: The government announced the revival of the Prison’s leather industry. This initiative in collaboration with the State Departments for Correctional Services and Livestock Development, came in response to the increasing demand for high-quality leather products around the world.

July 10th 2024: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development rolled out a collaborative plan with the private sector in a bid to double leather production by the end of 2024. There is no public record indicating that leather production doubled by the end of the year 2024.
