The Kenya Kwanza government made the commitment to provide its citizens with free internet and phone calls within the first 100 days.
From its JiConnect programme, which is aimed at establishing 25000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in urban and rural areas, the government reports that it has established 1,563 new public Wi-Fi hotspots countrywide. This includes areas such as Kenyatta Market, Githurai Market, Sikhendu Market, Kiminini Market and Diani Market.
There is, however, no public record to indicate programmes and initiatives that have made phone calls free in Kenya. There is also concern that the promise of 25000 public Wi-Fi hotspots will not be attained at the established hotspots only represent 6.25% of the target. The current Wi-Fi hotspots are also reported to not be working or unreliably slow.
