Establishing standards with Jua Kali industry on mass fittings

  • The Kenya Kwanza government promised to establish fitting standards to enable the Jua Kali sub-sector to mass-produce fittings.

  • The 2025 Budget Policy Statement affirms that the government aims to “support the establishment of an industrial park for construction materials … and ring-fence certain components … and the development of standards for MSME products.”
  • At the moment the government has ring-fenced 4.4 billion for the Jua Kali and  MSME sector in housing and construction.
  • However, there is no clear evidence that uniform, binding standards for windows, doors, or mass fittings (across building materials) have been formally adopted, enforced, or made accessible at scale to all Jua Kali artisans by 2025.
