Development of a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) storage facility in Mombasa

The Kenya Kwanza government promised to develop a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) storage facility in Mombasa, with a view to phasing out heavy fuel oil (HFO) from the power generation portfolio.

AMACO, a Greek company created a project page for a Mombasa LNG to Power and NG Transmission System Development proposing the construction of an LNG storage facility at Mombasa Port.
The government has reported that it is preparing to assess the commercial viability of the development of an LNG fired power plant at Dongo Kundu, Mombasa and recently invited proposals for transaction advisory services related to the proposed project. The government has taken steps towards the construction and commissioning of a bulk LPG storage facility in Mombasa, with some reports in January 2026 indicating that the project is 80% complete.
