Cheaper cooking gas

On 2nd March 2023, the President of Kenya promised that from June 2023, a 6 kg cylinder of cooking gas would cost between KES 300 and KES 500.

There is no public record showing a reduction of cooking gas prices to the above pledged amount.
In April 2026, Kenyans’ hope of accessing cheap cooking gas was thwarted as the highly anticipated deal between the Kenyan Government and a Saudi Arabia Firm that was to “guarantee” the cheaper gas collapsed. At the same time, the government raised the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) on cooking gas to Sh5.40 per kilogramme from 40 cents, setting up households for higher costs.
