Fuel prices to decrease starting December

On 18th November 2023, President William Ruto promised fuel price reduction starting in December 2023.

  • On 15th January 2024, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority released a statement that the cost of super petrol and diesel will drop by Sh5 per litre.
  • In April 2026, EPRA announced an increase in the prices of super petrol and diesel, Super petrol now retails at KSh 206.97 per litre, up KSh 28.69 from KSh 178.28, while diesel rises KSh 40.30 to an all-time high of KSh 206.84. The diesel increase is the largest single-month jump for any petroleum product in at least 21 years of price records, surpassing the previous record of KSh 25.00 set in September 2022 by 61%. This is despite the government cutting VAT on petroleum products from 16% to 13% via Legal Notice No. 69 dated April 14, 2026, and deployed approximately KSh 6.2 billion from the Petroleum Development Levy Fund to stabilise pump prices.
  • Further, on 15th May 2026, EPRA announced an increase in petrol prices by Sh 16.65 and an increase in Diesel prices by Sh 46.29, to a record high. This triggered a nationwide strike in the transport sector as matatus, bodabods and taxis halted operations.
