On 1st August 2023, President William Ruto promised that the government would hire 20,000 interns every year.
President William Ruto directed the public service commission to increase the number of interns recruited under the public service internship programme to 20,000 for the next cohort.
In July 2025, the Public Service Commission announced the recruitment of interns under the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) for the 2025/2026 Financial Year. The internship, however, is not a guarantee of employment and cannot be renewed.
In 25th February 2026, the government revealed plans to increase the number of interns entering the public service from the current 8,000 to 30,000 as part of plans to address the unemployment challenge that the country is grappling with.
