The Kenya Kwanza government promised to set up a National Open University to increase access and reduce the cost of university education while making 100 per cent transition to higher education a reality.
The Open University of Kenya was established and awarded a charter by the president on 4th August 2023.
June 2025: The government aims to grow the number of students enrolled in the Open University of Kenya (OUK) from the current 3,500 students to over 50,000 learners by the end of 2026. The University which received its charter in August 2023 specifically offers quality and accredited distance and E-learning programs to students at a subsidised cost.
