“Circular Economy” waste separation sites/infrastructure

The Kenya Kwanza Government promised that it would provide “circular economy” waste separation sites/infrastructure

  • The core of this promise is being fulfilled through the Sustainable Waste Management Act (SWMA) 2022, which mandates a “radical shift” from dumping to recycling.
  •  Regulations gazetted in late 2024 hold manufacturers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, incentivizing the creation of collection points and recycling loops.
  • The Ministry of Information and Digital Economy launched the E-Waste National Guidelines in October 2025 to provide a roadmap for the safe disposal and recycling of electronic devic
  • At the county level, Makueni County has announced plans to build a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) costing KSh 180 million to support waste segregation and recycling.
  • The COPIP pilot project in Mombasa (Likoni & Mvita sub-counties), with EIB backing, distributed separation bins to over 800 households and trained them in waste separation.
