Improve the capacity of day secondary schools

The Kenya Kwanza Government promised to improve the capacity of day secondary schools to guarantee access to quality education and reduce the cost of education.

  • As of January 2025, 14, 500 out of the 16,000 classrooms required by the first cohort of grade nine learners have been constructed by the Ministry of Education and the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CDF) across the country. There is, however, no concrete record of the full implementation of this promise.
  • The government has recruited 76,928 teachers, of whom 56,928 are permanent and pensionable, while 20,000 are interns, and only 9,000 are JSS teachers. The government stated that it has a plan in place to address the shortage of 20,000 teachers by January 2025, but there has been no progress on that front to date.
  • Additionally, there is limited capacity in junior secondary schools to hold students, and incoming students have been asked to seek alternative school options.
