Insurance cover for loss of life of officers

The Kenya Kwanza government vowed to provide insurance cover for loss of life for officers on duty (similar to that of the military).

The government provided a medical scheme for police and prison officers via private insurer Consortium (led by CIC) to provide comprehensive medical and dependents’ cover for officers.
In April 2026, 138,283 police and prison officers and their dependents were onboarded into the SHA Usalama Cover from the private insurance medical cover under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF). This scheme is said to provide a comprehensive benefits package for the officers, including primary healthcare and the Last Expense Benefit to families.
