National lottery, tax incentives for corporate sponsorship

The Kenya Kwanza government promised to consider the setting up of a national lottery, tax incentives for corporate sponsorship, a dedicated or ring-fenced tax, and a public-private partnership framework for infrastructure.

  • In 2023, the Kenya Kwanza Government reiterated this promise through the State Department for Sports’ strategic plan for the years 2023 through 2027.
  • The National Lottery Task Force was set up to shore up funding for Sports, Culture, and the Arts. The task force birthed 2 bills, the National Gambling Control Bill,2023, and the National Lottery Bill, 2023, whose proceeds go towards boosting financing for Sports and Arts.
  • As the president did not assent to the 2024 Finance Bill, the tax incentives for corporates sponsoring sports were never factored in.
