Reduced cost of calls and data

The Kenya Kwanza Government promised to reduce the cost of calls and data to allow wananchi and especially the youth to use online platforms for entertainment, information and business.

  • In November 2023, the Communications Authority of Kenya announced a reduction in charges of mobile call rates beginning March 2024, a move that was informed by the prevailing economic environment. However, the reduced rates are only applicable to  apply to only local voice traffic, which means calls originating and terminating within Kenya.
  • The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has implemented a long-term “glide path” to systematically lower the costs telecommunications operators charge each other, which in turn reduces retail prices for consumers
  •  While the government has pushed for lower regulatory rates, some gains have been offset by fiscal policies, such as the 2024 Finance Bill proposal to increase excise duty on telephone and internet services to 20%, which remains a point of contention for affordability
