Foreign Policy & Regional Integration

Ongoing

Trade and Regional Integration

Leveraging international engagements to create opportunities for Kenyan citizens, businesses, and investors. In particular, the government aims to expand the market for Kenyan products and services by taking advantage of our membership in regional organisations such as the East African Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The administration will also take advantage of Kenya’s status as a tech powerhouse to drive economic interest in the country further.

  • The administration has actively negotiated and pursued trade agreements, positioning Kenya as a key investment hub. However, broader trade performance has shown mixed results, and significant challenges such as market access barriers, persistent debt and fiscal constraints, and reliance on raw exports remain in converting these engagements into widespread economic benefits and export growth.
  • In November 2025, Kenya formally deposited its Instrument of Ratification for amendments to the EAC Customs Union Protocol, strengthening trade remedy provisions and rules-based trade.
  • Kenya is scheduled to host the 4th Tripartite Summit in February/March 2026. The summit aims to operationalise trade between ready members (EAC and SACU) and secure Nairobi as the TFTA Secretariat headquarters.
